I

have customers walk in every day and tell us “my mom used to do ceramics”, or “my grandma used to do ceramics” or “we used to go to this lady’s house and do ceramics in her basement every week”.  To be honest, I had no idea what they were talking about.  I thought ceramics and paint your own pottery were the same thing.  Boy was I wrong.

Back in the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s, ceramics was definitely a hobby that was a lot of work.  People made their own pottery pieces to eventually design and paint.  It started with “slip” which is a liquid clay, that was poured into molds.  After it dried, the molds were opened and you had your piece of greenware.  The greenware was then cleaned and sanded to get rid of any lines and imperfections caused by the molds, and then it was fired a first time in a kiln to create a piece of bisque.

That pr
ocess could take a couple of weeks to do before you got your actual pottery piece to paint.  And let’s face it, designing and painting the piece is the fun part.  Paint your own pottery studios took the messy, tedious, dirty process out of ceramics and gave customers what they want.  Something to paint and make their own.

At Maggie & Ellie’s Pottery and Art Studio, we stock our shelves with hundreds of different bisque pieces just waiting to be painted with special underglaze paints.  All of our underglazes are water-based and are not only non-toxic and food safe, but they won’t stain clothing.  After they are painted, you leave them with us for a week.  We dip them in a clear coat glaze and fire them in a kiln.  The firing process takes anywhere from 24-30 hours, depending on how long the kiln needs to cool down.  It is definitely worth the wait!  Every time we open a kiln, it feels like we are opening a treasure chest.

We carry pieces that appeal to kids (small animal figurines, donut and ice cream boxes, mermaids, dragons and dinosaurs, just to name a few) to houseware items (mugs, plates, platters, bowls, teapots, spoon rests, etc.) to other fun things like holiday items (jack-o-lanterns, ornaments, even nostalgic ceramic Christmas trees like Grandma used to have).  We are always changing our inventory to give you a great selection to choose from.

A Wide Selection of Pottery to Choose From

We are the perfect place for kids, families, scouts, youth groups, date nights, ladies nights and even office team building gatherings.

Are you afraid you’re not creative enough to paint?  Don’t let that stop you.  We have lots of samples, idea books and a friendly staff who will help you get your creative juices flowing.  Still not convinced you can make something that will turn out well?  We’ll show you the sure-fire bubble blowing technique that anyone can do and it makes any piece look amazing.

Choose Any Color in the Rainbow

How much does this experience cost?  Our pottery pieces range from $12 (small figurines) to $110 (our largest Christmas tree), with the majority in the $15-30 price range.  Did we mention we are an all-inclusive studio?  That’s right, the price you see is the price you pay.  There are no hidden sitting/painting/firing fees, ever.  So, stop in during our regular business hours (Wednesday thru Saturday 11 am to 8 pm, and Sundays 12 to 5 pm) and have a seat – no appointment is ever needed!
